The second installment to the Guitar Hero series was no doubt the one that propelled the franchise into the mainstream, thus paving way for the rhythm action genre to enjoy huge commercial success. Everyone and their hamster were strapping plastic X-plorers around their neck, being seduced by the challenging tones of Lynyrd Skynyrd’s Free Bird. But with the surge in popularity of glorified fisher price guitars came criticism directly aimed towards rhythm action.

Perhaps most notably, Nickelback’s frontman, Chad ‘do-you-like-my-perm’ Kroegar, blamed Guitar Hero for the lack of new talent in the US. In his interview with MTV, he urged kids to “Set down the ‘Guitar Hero…’”, and to “…learn how to play an actual guitar”. This particular news item actually appeared in my feed reader at the end of last year, but a couple of days ago I heard a similar quip from a friend through Facebook.

Video Games And Other Halves

If you’re looking for insightful tips on how to get your missus loving Master Chief, run along. I’m looking for those that can tell me how to get my other half as excited about frags, Achievements, and all things Tom Clancy as I am.

Yet again I find myself in another relationship with someone disinterested in video games. I knew this from the get-go as it was, of course, a mandatory question I asked on our first date (ahem). Hairy chest? Check. Non smoker? Check. 360 gamer? Negative. I told myself, however, that he may catch the console bug like I have, and a few days later he text asking where he could pick up an original Xbox, already showing promise.

Gaming Question And Answer

Musings On Rock Band/Guitar Hero Difficulty

I never leave a game incomplete. Irrespective of how tough it is – or even broken in terms of game play – I’ll always chip away until I pass the finish line. Lately, there have been some frustrating exceptions to this rule with a few games I seemingly lack the skill to finish, all falling under the Rock Band/Guitar Hero banner.

I’ve always maintained I’m pretty good at the rhythm action genre, but that probably comes down to the fact I have a lot of persistence with gaming. With both Guitar Hero II and III, I made it right through to the last tier on Expert (with GHII I was only two songs from completing Expert). However, I can never get past those last few hurdles.
