2009 was to be the year my concentration for gaming dwindled to a considerable low. People say that gaming is a hobby you inevitably grow out off, but the fact I returned to it on my 19th birthday after a 4 year hiatus, and have since spent a lot of time doing, proved to be the opposite for myself. However, something odd has happened to me over the past 12 months, and I find myself notably less excited about gaming than I ever have been. Where did it go wrong, and why?
On January 25th, my birthday, I found myself having “the talk” with a guy I was seeing. You know the talk, the awkward one where you’re furtively investigating how serious you’ve become, whether you’ve made the leap to exclusivity or are still seeing other people. For whatever reason, having a boyfriend who didn’t game meant that I also paid less attention to my Xbox, especially as only a few months earlier I had finished with a guy who was as big a gamer as I. It was at this point I was playing Skate 2, the follow-up to one of my favourite games of 2007.
Skate 2 was meant to have me as hooked as the original, especially as Black Box had done a great job of building on and improving the foundations of Skate. Somehow it failed to be the game that had me itching to finish work just so I could freeskate around San Vanelona, which was odd as it was undoubtedly an improvement over the original. It wasn’t logical… I loved the original, and now I was playing an improved version of that, so there really should have been no reason I was struggling to get excited about Skate 2. Yet I was. Even though I had put my inability of getting hooked on Skate 2 as a direct result of my new relationship, it was to set the unfortunate tone for the coming year.

A lot of people happen upon my site by searching for Resident Evil 5 and how tough the Veteran difficulty is. I wrote about the frustrating challenge I faced with attempting Resident Evil on Veteran, but I’ve since completed this mode in just over 5 hours, and it turns out it’s pretty easy!
Perhaps the sole aspect that makes Resident Evil 5 so tricky - on any difficulty - is the limited supply of ammo you tend to have stored in your inventory at any given time. While Majinis and co. do drop a generous amount of ammo, the enemies take a good few hits to incapacitate if you haven’t upgraded any weapons, so you can go through a significant amount of ammo in a short time. Turns out, though, that you can unlock unlimited ammo for the rocket launcher if you complete the game in under 5 hours.
A friend and I decided this would be the smartest thing to do before attempting it on Veteran, and in just over 3 hours, which was in one sitting, we had finished the story on Amateur, unlocking unlimited ammo for the rocker launcher. KABLOOM! (That’s my rocket launcher noise).

I don’t know what’s wrong with me. Resident Evil started off brilliantly, and I was really enjoying myself, but now I can’t muster up any enthusiasm to play it. I’m finding myself in a bit of a gaming slump to be honest. But I know what the cure is - for me at least; to lose myself in a Japanese Role Playing Game. Oh yes.
Originally I was planning on going back to Lost Odyssey for a second run through (if you’re a JRPG fan but haven’t played LO, get on it!). However, a friend said he had a spare copy of Infinite Undiscovery if I wanted it. There’s a lot of mixed reviews about it, but I love playing a game you expect to be shit. You’re always pleasantly surprised. And JRPGs always have the funniest and campest dialogue. So, expect a video review (providing it runs in bloody Pal 50).

Before I begin, I must point out I’ll no longer be doing a video review of Resident Evil 5. Why? Unfortunately my capture card can only capture footage while running in Pal 50. Resident Evil 5 will only run in Pal 60. Poo. The manufacturer of the capture card I’m using weren’t clear about this at all, so I’m pissed. I’ll try and find a way around it, but don’t hold your breath. I’m not very techy.
I’ve been playing Resident Evil 5 for a little over a week now. By default I’ll always dive in on the hardest difficulty available; it doesn’t occur to me to do otherwise. I’m not sure why that is. Perhaps it’s a combination of enjoying a challenge, feeling I get more value for money with the notion I can’t blast through it, and maybe because a friend it drilled into me that it’s the best way to play. Since adopting that philosophy, I’ve wholeheartedly agreed with him. Except when it comes to Resident Evil 5.
The only game I’ve played prior to this where I was mere minutes from changing the difficulty was, as I’m sure you can guess, Call of Duty: Modern Warfare. Everybody knows how brutal Modern Warfare is on Veteran. But I persevered with it, managing to beat the story mode as well as Mile High Club on Veteran. No doubt my most exciting gaming moment, spurring a little dance around the living room of my house. Since my proud Call of Duty conquest, I’ve not had any gaming moments that have come remotely close to being as tough as that, but here I am, finding myself closer to turning down the difficulty than I was with Call of Duty.
So, what is it that’s tempting me to face the Manjini on Normal as opposed to Veteran?

It’s still early days for me, but Resident Evil 5 has so far been a blast. Flawless graphics, stunning environment, a ripped Chris Redfield… The only downside to date has been the tricky control scheme, but even that hasn’t stopped me from loving Capcom’s latest survival horror offering.

To those who are indecisive regarding purchasing Resident Evil 5, you may be happy to know I’m working on my video review for it. I did, however, find myself waffling on about my experience with past Resident Evil games; which ones I’ve played, and whether my inexperience with the franchise in general has an effect on how I’ve grasped the controls in the latest Resident Evil outing (compared to those who may be Resi veterans). There’s been so much controversy surrounding the controls, and I could have easily clogged up my video review by talking about it. So, I moved the majority of my control chat here.
I’ve yet to complete a Resident Evil game. Seriously, and this is coming from a self-confessed completion whore. All of them came out at a time where my love for gaming was a little more casual, more so of the ‘pick up and play’ variety. Having said that, I’ve actually owned the original Resident Evil on both the PlayStation and GameCube platform because I loved it so much, no doubt spending more time with the latter.
