Aside: Infinite Undiscovery - The Tom Cruise Of JRPG’s
I know, I know… I’ve used the Tom Cruise analogy before. Anyway, I get asked a lot for JRPG recommendations on the 360. Most people, though, admit they lack the time needed to put the leg work in. JRPGs typically last a good 40+ hours longer, at least, than your average game. Couple that with recent searches of “How long does Infinite Undiscovery last?” directing people to my blog, and I feel it’s the perfect time to turn those with pressed time towards Infinite Undiscovery.
Infinite Undiscovery is an under-appreciated JRPG that does take a good bit of time to get into. It was only at about 8 hours in that everything clicked for me and I found myself gripped, and by the time I had hit the 9 hour mark I was already prompted to switch to the second disc. There are three discs in total, therefore I’d say you’re looking at 30-40 hours gameplay time. Nothing like the 110 hours I put into Lost Odyssey, and thus perfect for those looking for a short flirtation with the quirky and camp nature of JRPGs we’ve come to know (and for me, love).
Note: I made a boob. IU is only two discs, not three.
JRPG Round Up Bonanza

I’m a little fond of Japanese Role Playing Games, especially of the turn based variety. I like quirky characters, immersive story lines, secrets that can only be uncovered with 40+ hours of gameplay, and hunting for hidden treasures. Yes, I’m a geek. The next rainy day (or night, rather) that comes my way will see me begin Infinite Undiscovery, a game I had listed on my wish list way back in July. Before I begin, however, I want to turn my attention to all the other great JRPGs I’ve played on the 360, and while I have missed out on a couple so far, a lot of people still ask me what I’d recommend. Oh, and I must point out I won’t be going into any of the plot details here, simply because JRPGs generally follow the same, cliched story line, OK? So, in no particular order, let’s begin.
Enchanted Arms
Enchanted Arms was the first JRPG I played on the Xbox 360. Despite the awful criticism it was met with (at the time my publication of choice was X360, and they awarded it an embarrassing 4/10), I still took my chances because there weren’t a whole host of other options at the time.
Aside: I’m Ditching Chris Redfield For A Camp Japanese Dude
I don’t know what’s wrong with me. Resident Evil started off brilliantly, and I was really enjoying myself, but now I can’t muster up any enthusiasm to play it. I’m finding myself in a bit of a gaming slump to be honest. But I know what the cure is - for me at least; to lose myself in a Japanese Role Playing Game. Oh yes.
Originally I was planning on going back to Lost Odyssey for a second run through (if you’re a JRPG fan but haven’t played LO, get on it!). However, a friend said he had a spare copy of Infinite Undiscovery if I wanted it. There’s a lot of mixed reviews about it, but I love playing a game you expect to be shit. You’re always pleasantly surprised. And JRPGs always have the funniest and campest dialogue. So, expect a video review (providing it runs in bloody Pal 50).
The RPG vs The FPS
The last game I completed was Brothers in Arms: Hells Highway. Before that it was Mass Effect. Prior to that I finished Eternal Sonata for the second time, and previous to that, I put 110 hours into Lost Odyssey. Currently I’m nearing finishing Mass Effect for a second time (racing my best friend to 1000 points… and currently winning!), and next on my agenda is Fable II. Four out of those five games I’ve mentioned are RPGs!
My Favourite Video Game Character
Up until just recently, Frank West was my favourite video game character. I don’t know why, but I instantly took a liking to the photographer/zombie slasher from Dead Rising. And even now, if I was to ever find myself stuck in a mall with +54,000 zombies, he’d be the man I’d want by my side. Even if it did mean finding my life was second priority to getting a good photograph.
Decisions, Decisions: A Look At Forthcoming Releases
If the release calendar over at GamePlay is anything to go by, September is going to be a very difficult month for myself in the decisions department. Looking at my wish list, September alone has 7 titles out which I’m desperate to drop some cash on and invest some serious time into.
Fortunately I can’t jump from one game to another without completing whatever I started, so I won’t find my bank balance taking too much of a hammering. I am, however, completely stumped as to what I should buy.
After playing Dragon Age: Origins, Bioware’s latest Role Playing Game, for just under a month, I’m only 30% odd complete. There’s sex, there’s violence, there’s a question of morals, there’s a meaty story. With real-time gory combat and big swords, it’s what every action RPG fan wants, right?
