Also, just wanted to thank Calzo Houdini for providing the intro track, and Andrew Cornett for the opening sequence.

Scavenging In New Vegas

Wednesday, January 12th, 2011

I return, this time singing the praise of Fallout: New Vegas. I’ve spent a mere 43 hours trawling the wasteland, and have just began making a dent in the main quest. What I’m particularly enjoying about the follow up to Fallout 3, which I put 80-odd hours into and fully expect to match with New Vegas, is that Hardcore mode exhibits a more realistic spin on scavenging, an integral part of survival in the wasteland.

During one of the many hours I sunk into Fallout 3, I couldn’t help but feel that Bethesda could have refined the scavenging side of things. Starting off with nothing but a Vault 22 jumpsuit and slowly building your arsenal as you fulfilled quests and uncovered new locations, was both equally fun and challenging, but the risk of survival was dampened by the fact the only real threat were enemies, and whether you were well enough equipped with weapons and aid to effectively deal with them.

With the development of New Vegas being handed over to Obsidian, things have changed in respects to scavenging. Much to my enjoyment, (if you play on Hardcore) you’re faced with the constant threat of dehydration and starvation. What was once a pleasant surprise when you casually happened across a bottle of purified water, often becomes a desperate scramble for some form of hydration — any form of hydration. Even those plagued with rads. Fast traveling to locations speeds up the starvation / dehydration process. Things can get tricky! With that said, purified water and what not isn’t so rare that the game becomes impossible, and you become familiarised with the wasteland enough to know where to go to fulfill specific needs.

What I Have Been Playing (And What I Will Be Playing)

Tuesday, May 11th, 2010

I’ve been a naughty girl. I’ve shunned my ‘one game woman’ approach in favour of simultaneous variety. The reason being that I recently finished Splinter Cell: Conviction, and with only a week or so until Skate 3 is released, I didn’t want to start — and not be able to finish — something else entirely. This gave me the opportunity to tie up some ‘loose ends’.

My friend and I completed the co-op mode of Splinter Cell: Conviction on Realistic, which took longer than anticipated merely because of the connectivity issues we regularly experienced. I’m not sure what the issue was, but neither of us had a dodgy connection and were chatting without interruption over Xbox Live. This usually indicates it wasn’t an issue on either of our ends. I’m assuming it is, as usual, down to Ubisoft’s paltry Multiplayer programming. Bear in mind I’m a huge Rainbow Six: Vegas fan, which is also a Ubisoft (and Tom Clancy) title, but that would have never won any awards for running smoothly online, and I’m the first to admit that. As fun as the Tom Clancy games are in Multiplayer mode, they rarely seem to run fluidly.

With Conviction, you can guarantee the frame rate will drop repeatedly, and at one point you will inevitably get booted from the game. And with each co-op mode campaign being split into 4 chapters, you can rest assured that when you do get booted out, you’ll have to play through a fair bit of the game again. Considering the approach to SC:C is slow and stealthy, this gets frustrating.

With that said, there’s a lot to the Multiplayer that adds some much needed overall substance to Conviction. Even though we’ve polished off the co-op campaign, we’re now attempting the other co-op modes!

Pop a Cap on it, ‘yo

Monday, July 27th, 2009

I don’t own Halo 3, but if I did I’d have 1750 GamerPoints to chase. I thought Fallout 3’s 1450 worth of Achievements were bad, but no, Halo takes the hardcore biscuit. Remember when retail games capped at 1000? Arcade games at 200? It seems this was only to be the case in the 360’s infancy, back when gamers payed little notice to the fruitless digits tagging alongside their GamerTag.

Now developers deliver additional Achievements, usually in the form of Downloadable Content (DLC). Whatever the case, it’s to keep gamers coming back, to give us a bit of replay value for what we pay (though, more often than not, we also have to pay for the DLC). However, there’s also a degree of agitation, for me at least, that comes with each increase in cap.

You see, gaming can be an expensive hobby, and I don’t always feel comfortable spending significant amounts of money on it. Especially right now, I’m watching every spare penny, with any pocket money being invested into my business. For that reason I’ve found it useful trading/selling games I’ve completed and am no longer needing. In fact, I believe the pre-owned market is what makes high street retailer, GameStation, the most money, and is - on the flip side - the biggest cause of concern for developers.

Operation: Anchorage Is Just Like Tom Cruise

Monday, February 2nd, 2009

Short.

When I Tweeted (or Twittered, whatever the technical term is) that I was playing the new Fallout 3 downloadable content, Operation: Anchorage, quite a few people @ replied me asking if it was any good. If you were one of those people who asked and are pissed I never replied, well that was simply because I had just started playing, and was wishing to reserve my opinion until I had actually finished it. Which I now have. And it really didn’t take long. The gist of it is, yes, it’s good - heck, it’s Fallout 3 - but I’m not so sure it’s worth what it’s being charged at.

Gaming Question And Answer

Monday, January 26th, 2009

I actually stole this from my friend, Mr Havros. I’m sure he won’t mind what with him being a generous chap and all. Anyway, sometimes people come across my site by searching for a specific answer via Google. I’m sure they rarely get the answer they’re looking for from my site, and being the helpful little lady I am, well I figured I’d respond in a much more targeted manner here.

Bourne To Be… Not Very Wild

Tuesday, January 13th, 2009

Usually I won’t write about a game until I’ve played through the entirety of it. However, this is not a review. It’s a… a… I don’t know, a vent of frustration!

I’ve really enjoyed watching Jason Bourne’s adventures unfold in the Bourne trilogy on HD DVD. It was with much intrigue then that I followed the news of a Bourne video game, though with the stigma attached to licensed video games - and rightly so - I never expected anything more than a couple of hours of mindless action. However, the developers made a conscious decision not to model Bourne on Matt Damon (though I’ve since read that was down to “creative differences”), giving him an identity of his own, therefore making the game feel less like a movie tie-in.

Fallout 3 Love

Wednesday, December 24th, 2008

So I’ve just (accidently) finished Fallout 3, and I’m actually pretty gutted it’s ended. You know you’ve played a great game when you’re disappointed to see the credits roll. Never-the-less, this paves the way for Tomb Raider: Underworld, The Last Remnant, and Grand Theft Auto IV - all of which are patiently sitting beneath the tree, awaiting my overly zealous hands to tear at the festive paper that adorns them, cradling them close to my body… Yeah, I’ve gone too far.

Aside: NXE Hiccups

Friday, November 28th, 2008

Since installing NXE 9 days ago, I’ve encountered a few abnormalities with my Xbox. Actually, one of them isn’t so much an abnormality as it has happened to me on countless occasions before, but it seems to be occurring that little bit more often since updating.

Firstly, my 360 has frozen on me twice since downloading NXE. Luckily both times have been while exploring the new Dashboard, fortunately avoiding me to lose a sickening amount of progress on Fallout 3. It tends to happen when I’m bringing up the Guide, for whatever reason.

Secondly, and this is a new one to me, I’m sometimes having to sign in to my profile twice. Odd! My Xbox isn’t set to automatically log me in as CandyStoreRock due to an unfortunate incident with Pro Evo earlier this year, which tarred my profile with an unwanted 0/1000 points. But when I select my profile, log onto Xbox Live, look at my Friends List to see who’s online, I’ll suddenly be signed out having to repeat the process.

I’d be naive not to expect hiccups here and there with the launch of NXE, so is anyone else having similar problems?
