Bioshock 2: Bring Back Jack

Rapture

Bioshock 2 is released in Europe today, which is odd given that it’s a Tuesday (we always get new releases on the Friday). I’m not that excited about it. Why? A couple of reasons, which I’m surprised to admit, especially as the first Bioshock was outstanding; one of the few games I will heartily recommend to anyone and everyone, simply because, from start to finish, it is consistently successful in creating a suspenseful environment with an unrivaled atmosphere. So yes, the original Bioshock was stellar, one of the 360’s finest exclusives. The sequel, however, has not only come at a wrong time for me, but it’s also the fact I can’t seem to muster up the enthusiasm to play as a Big Daddy.

What I particularly loved about Bioshock, was the entire story surrounding Jack, the character you took control of. He happened upon Rapture because of an airplane accident, and from the point you entered the lighthouse onwards, everything was unsettling and begging to be explored. Seriously, just thinking back to the first few moments of taking control of Jack and wading through the water towards the lighthouse is making me giddy. Big Daddies, as you know, are an integral part of Rapture. They were a familiar encounter in the original, and insanely fun to go up against. They were pretty resilient, but nothing a dozen electric bucks couldn’t take down.

One For The Achievement Whores

Monday, May 18th, 2009

I love Achievements, but I’m not what one would call an Achievement whore. It’s more so about completion percentage for me; getting 1000/1000 for each game, or as close as my patience/skill will let me (I’m also not the type to play King Kong or Avatar The Last Airbender to get there). However, I still like to chase those G’s in a bid to up my completion percentage, and in doing so I came across a cool site. It’s called True Achievements, with the tagline ‘Just How Good Are You?’.

Upon signing up to TA it aggregated all my GamerTag’s feeds; my gamerscore, my completion percentage, what Achievements I do and do not have, my friends list (well, the friends which are also signed up to TA, which is currently only one person), and other small nuggets of information.

My profile page looks as follows (click to see full page):

I Wish I Liked Space

Thursday, August 21st, 2008

From as far back as I can remember I’ve had a gross dislike towards anything space related. My ex was fixated on the genre, and often I’d have to sit through episodes of Battlestar Gallactica, completely depressed and cursing myself for not investing in a second TV for the bedroom. Then there’s movies. The only sc-fi movie I’ve ever been able to stomach - and actually rather enjoyed - was 2001: A Space Odyssey, but only because I had to write an essay on it for college, otherwise I would never have given it a look-in. Unfortunately, my dislike towards anything space related even extends to video games. When people talk about KOTOR and what an accomplishment it was, all I can think about is the hugely uninspiring environment I would find myself playing in. I couldn’t even bring myself to finish Lego Star Wars! (more…)

Morality In Video Games

Monday, August 4th, 2008

Gaming is often referred to as a means of escapism from real life. We’re given the ability to not only control another character, but to become fully immersed in their world and live their life. It’s an opportunity to do something you’ll have little to no chance of doing in real life, whether that’s being recruited as a stealthy agent for the NSA, or to race around London at dangerously high speeds in a Ferrari. OK, make that no chance of doing in real life.
