Oh Noes, Mass Effect 3 Muliplayer Announcement

I know gamers go nuts for multiplayer, but I’m not one of those. I’m a solo girl, making major exceptions for Rainbow Six: Vegas, bitches! As much as I trust BioWare in the RPG department, the announcement of multiplayer in Mass Effect 3 has slightly dampened my enthusiasm for the game.

Games that have great single player campaigns don’t need to tack on multiplayer to cater to the rest of the market. I’m not saying that’s what BioWare has done; I haven’t played the game therefore wouldn’t know, but the cynic in me is slightly worried.

Especially when I read this quote:

Success in multi-player will have a direct impact on the outcome of the single player campaign.

Noo! I usually skip multiplayer altogether, for various reasons, but it looks to be a crucial factor in one of my most anticipated games. Although BioWare are insistent it won’t compromise the single player campaign, and at least playing with friends solves the stupid AI issues I faced in Mass Effect 2. I really pray it doesn’t fuck up what was already a near perfect franchise.

I was looking at the multiplayer aspect the same way, but I’m having faith in BioWare. If it will be as much fun as the Spec Ops missions in Modern Warfare 2 - count me in.

I’m really glad they didn’t come up with the stupid idea of going into any competitive multiplayer modes.

I agree. The Mass Effect series has have been my favourite games since they came out and although I enjoy the “expanded universe” of the comics and books that have been written, talk of multiplayer and an upcoming movie feels like they’re trying to bleed every last drop of goodness out of it and if they’re not careful they’re going to spoil it.

The best stories/games/films are the ones where the creators draw a line and say this is how many we’re doing and we’re going to make them the best we possibly can. That’s it.

I truly hope multiplayer will be something I can just ignore like I do with most other games. :-/

Well, it says it will have a direct impact and I do believe it will. But I’m think it’s highly unlikely that Bioware would do anything that might hurt the singleplayer-experience. I think it’ll be content, awards etc etc.

A part of me would like to have some friends accompany me on some journeys, but then I’m also reminded about the way I play games, tactically and carefully. More often taking the stealth-route than the action-route. And even if I’m forced to take action-routes I do it tactically. My friends however zip-line in and blows everything up before I even get there.

I wouldn’t worry too much honestly.

Haven’t been reading your gaming-related stuff lately Ash, I’ll get into it again, it’s nice to see you writing about it.

I’m equally apprehensive about this news. I’d rather the focus was purely on making the final part of the trilogy as awesome as it can be. It’s also worrying that the co-op part affects the single player campaign but I don’t understand how, there can only be one Shepard surely? Does that mean only the host players game will be effected, meaning you have to play the campaign twice? Me no know! Questions!

It’s also being developed by a secondary studio. It’s hard not to judge yet, I just really hope they do it right.

I don’t know why people want to fit in every game, where there are no need to multiplayer; it’s not good for great games. If they will add multiplayer in Mass Effect 3 then I will be disappointed, I think Mass Effect is the best in Single player mode.
