My Early 2010 Gaming Schedule

My 2010 Gaming Schedule

A couple of people found it amusing when I casually mentioned my loose gaming schedule I’m attempting to follow. I guess this is one of many sad attributes that explain my prolonged singledom. If I don’t plan, I find it slightly unnerving not knowing what releases are ahead and how I can strategise what games to play around any up-coming titles. Take my current situation; it’s a bit of a busy one with various games vying for my attention, but with a degree of planning I should be able to coincide everything perfectly and have minimal overlap. Yes, I’m that geeky.

Christmas has just passed, and, like you, I’ve added a few new additions to my video game arsenal. To be specific, I currently have Lego Indiana Jones, Batman Arkham Asylum, and Dragon Age: Origins fresh in their wrapper. At least all three were until I decided to play Dragon Age: Origins. You see, it would have been a quick and dirty run-through of Batman (I’ve heard the story isn’t particularly long) if Mass Effect 2 wasn’t released less than 4 weeks away. Make no mistake, the Mass Effect sequel is taking well deserved priority in my schedule, and so I have to plan around that. Comprende?

This becomes tricky considering I stick to one game at a time. If a game has a story, which most do, I’ll see it through from start to finish without interruption from another game. I can break it up by playing something casual a la Trials HD or Battlefield 1943, but to swap between, say, Dragon Age: Origins and Mass Effect 2 would kill me. This is why I need a schedule!

So here it is, my early 2010 gaming schedule. Does it really get any sadder than this?

- Whore Dragon Age: Origins from Christmas day through to the 29th of January, when Mass Effect 2 is released in Europe (Though it’s looking likely that DA:O may spill over a week or so).

- Whore Mass Effect 2 for however long it takes. Side quests, Achievements and exploration are mandatory, so it may take a while.

- Sulk while everyone plays Bioshock 2.

- Dedicate a couple of weeks to Bioshock’s sequel/prequel. I’ll have missed the release date anyway what with it being only a couple of weeks after Mass Effect 2.

- Get acquainted with Gotham City’s favourite superhero, Batman, in Arkham Asylum.

- Contemplate picking up Heavy Rain, but likely choosing Final Fantasy XIII instead and embarking on another massive story.

- Meanwhile, Left 4 Dead 2 and Lego Indiana Jones (Lego games are for fun, not story) will be taking a good beating whenever I can pull myself away from the very rich single player experience I have lined up.

Mass Effect 2 alone will take me through to February/March depending how much time I’ve given myself to game while I continue to work, so it won’t be a while until I get my hands on Bioshock. Truthfully, though, I’m used to this as I tend to prioritise RPG’s. I remember when the original Bioshock was released, it clashed with another big game of ‘07 — Blue Dragon. I opted for Blue Dragon and didn’t get around to Bioshock for a while. No harm done, however, if the game is worth it. And I can say with some degree of confidence that Mass Effect 2 will be.

On another note, Dragon Age: Origins is proving to be truly massive in terms of game time. Of course I wouldn’t have expected anything else from Bioware, and if my current experience is anything to go by, I can easily see myself getting addicted to it as the holiday festivites have died down and I can dedicate some serious time to it.

Do you plan what you’re going to play and when you’ll play it? Or do you pick everything up as it’s released and dip in and out whenever you feel like it?

I tend to plan around what’s in the pile of shrink-wrapped games next to the TV - 1 at a time for major story-driven games (went through Batman:AA, Uncharted, and single player MW2 in that order, now on Uncharted 2), interspersed with multi-player stuff (L4D2 and MW2 at the minute). I tend to buy what tickles my fancy on release date, and then not play it for 2 months while I catch up. Need for Speed: Shift and KillZone 2 (part of my PS3 bundle) are still gathering dust, waiting to be overtaken with Bayonetta, Splinter Cell: Conviction, and God of War 3 (or the collection, in which case it’ll be the remastered 1, then 2 then 3!).

Recently I have started to get back into frequent gaming. Prior to that I was playing once or twice a month, and adding any games I fancied onto a list in OmniFoucs.

This has led to a gaming schedule which can be summed up as:

You know that game released a year ago, that you never played? Buy it for crazy cheap, and play that now.

I got Mirror’s Edge for £3.24, and yesterday I bought Mass Effect for about the same (both from Steam).

I’m still reading PC Gamer, to keep up with all the latest and greatest, but my “year behind” schedule means I can still play great games, at a fraction of the cost.

I’m currently wrapping up Borderlands (which is stupid fun) and will then move onto Dawn of War II (just before the new expansion is released) and Mass Effect. Then once Dragon Age is a little cheaper I’ll snap that up. Not too sure about Bioshock though, in hindsight I didn’t have much fun with it and never completed the story, so I’ll probably pass on number two.

Plus WoW Cataclysm is going to drop at the end of the year, so I’ll no doubt sink some time into that.

I have a different ’schedule’ than yours.
I’m no big fan of RPG’s… I like the story and setting, but I’m more of a hack-and-slash guy… just gimme a big sword and a lot of meat… and I’m happy.

But yeah… I’m still playing MW2 multiplayer daily and when I’m looking at 2010 - I can only shiver and hope I can manage to play all that beauty.

Splinter Cell Conviction, Mafia 2, Alan Wake, Battlefield: Bad Company 2, Darksiders, Fable III and I probably forget about 10 other must-play-titles.

And there is gonna be DLC for MW2 as well… so help me, I don’t think I’ll be able to play everything.
Maybe I’ll have to choose and save the others for later… aaargh!

It’s hard. Very very hard.
And I also need some time to continue my Assassins Creed 2 story, I want to go back to Fallout 3 (still haven’t finished it) and have so many other games which I want to play… but probably never ever will play anymore, since there are so many other new games coming out every month).

It’s hard to be a gamer sometimes ;)

When it comes to gaming I don’t tend to plan anything. I have a habit of buying every single game that looks interesting, even when I’ve got a big stack of unfinished stuff to get through, figuring I’ll get round to them all eventually. I’m a bit of a completion whore, so I’ll never declare a game “finished” unless I’ve got every achievement (unless they’re stupidly unrealistic achievements) so even now I must have about 15 games installed on my 360 Hard Drive I still count as “to-do”. Some games I simply couldn’t do by just focusing on it until it’s done… I bought NHL 09 last year and one of the achievements is getting your Be A Pro player to Legend status, which requires hundreds of games… Considering I play 30 minute games, all I can really do is a few at a time then come back to it, or I’d be playing non-stop hockey for months.

Ideally, I’d do what you do, I’d like to stick to a game and feel like it’s “done” before I start another, but there’s simply that many games worth playing these days that I’ve got to fit them all in where I can. The annoying thing about achievements, as great as I think they are, is that when I start playing a mediocre game that normally I would’ve stopped playing and moved on, I feel like I have to finish it. I hate unfinished games sitting there on my record.

I’m a bit like Arnold in that I have a massive backlog of games, but I have less time than ever!

I’ve just pre-ordered Mass Effect 2 from Amazon for £30 for my birthday and that will get most of my time from the end of Jan.

I’m trying to concentrate on completing Assasins Creed 2 by then mixed in with some DIRT 2 which is Great fun, but then the Multiplayer Factor kicks in, the Mrs and I play 1 vs 100 loads and  then there is MW2!

I can’t even begin to think about games in Feb :(

I agree with Arnold. I play each game till it ‘feels done’, but with some games it’s just not worth it to get 100% of achievements all the time. I’ll either hammer a game till completion (Arkham Asylum, Uncharted 2, Assassin’s Creed II), or flit between a few games, dipping in and out of them (Burnout Paradise, Modern Warfare 2, inFamous). I call this my rotisserie chicken method: keeping everything rotated and ticking over.

I guess it depends on your mood at the time, how much time you can spare, and the type of game it is.

The next games I’ll be picking up will be Darksiders (a must) and Bayonetta (a must), I’ll then try to get a hold of Demon’s Souls to Ps3 since it’s gamespots GOTY (I believe) then I’ll whore Mass Effect 2 until I’m satisfied.

Though I don’t know if I’ll be able to finish 3 games before the end of January, it’ll be hard considering all the work I have to do as well but I really would be a nice start of the year.

Dragon Age will keep you busy a solid 30 hours easy, but I’ve already finished it so I’ll save the second playthrough til the next dry season.

I’m like you Ashley - I try to plan out what I’ll be playing, usually according to the release schedule.

Of course the problem with this time of year is that the industry releases all their big titles during the holiday period! I know it helps them cash in, but wish they would stagger it a bit so we’d have time to actually play them all : )

Think I’m going to use Lovefilm over the next few months to catch up on missed games like Borderlands, ACII and Dragon’s Age.

@Luc I used to do that, but it no longer makes sense given that games come down in price fairly quickly. I’ll kick myself if I buy a game on release yet don’t play it until a month or so down the line, by which point it’s halved in price. Anyway, it sounds like you have a bunch of games to catch up on as well. Roll on a gaming drought, I say.

@Andy That’s a great method for games you aren’t crazy excited about, but there are some games I feel I must own and play through as soon as they’re released. Like Modern Warfare 2; the only game to have me queuing at midnight so I could play asap.

@Skar Hah, I absolutely agree about it being hard to be a gamer at times. Especially on the wallet ;) Like you, I want to go back to Fallout 3 and play the abundance of DLC there is, but where will I find the time with such a great 2010 line-up?!

@Arnold I guess my reply to Luc applies to you as well, about how I can’t justify buying games I won’t get round to playing for a while. Of course, Christmas is different as people are buying them for you ;) As for Achievements and when to consider a game completed, you know I like me some G’s, but in busy gaming periods I’m willing to sacrifice Achievements for simply finishing the story.

@Dave When is your birthday? Mine is fast approaching on January 25th. Given that Mass Effect 2 is out just before Feb, I doubt you’ll need to think about what you’re playing that month as Mass Effect 2 should easily cover it.

@Los Havros Yes, you’re right, it does depend on your mood. There are some games I’ll happily dip in and out of, but for the most part I have to dedicate 100% of my attention to one game at any given time. Sometimes I wish I was different.

@Christoffer That’s what concerns me about this year in general as I plan on working super hard with my business. I hope gaming isn’t affected. How many hours did you put into Dragon Age? I’ll hopefully go back for a second playthrough, but like you it won’t be straight away. Too. Many. Games.

@Dennis I’m keeping my fingers crossed for a severe gaming drought come March. I have a whole backlog of games and DLC to catch up on. I’m not sure renting Dragon Age is such a good time — apparently you can clock in well over 100 hours!

# January 4th, 2010 at 4:20 pm

Mine is the 15th, thankfully no one is buying me games!

# January 4th, 2010 at 4:29 pm

@Ashley Yeah there are a lot of game to play, I put around 27-30hours into Dragon Age I did the sidequests as I happened upon them and completed the main. I didn’t spend time leveling or searching for other sidequests.

Even though Dragon Age is a good game to me it got pretty repetitive by the end of the game.

At the start of January I wanted to pick one game to play. There were some big RPGs in there like Dragon Age and Lost Odysessy but they’ve been put back until February on my scheldule now. I decided to play Assassin’s Creed II which I’m hoping that I can finish soon, in time for Bayonetta on my Birthday, the 12th. After finishing Bayonetta/Assassin’s Creed II I NEED to finish the first Mass Effect again as I don’t have a save game on this 360. Fortunately I have some time off where I can hammer through some games as it’s gonna be tight to get all that done before Mass Effect 2.
