I’m Not A Multiplayer Gamer

Wednesday, December 2nd, 2009 at 12:44 pm in Xbox Live · Comments

Okay, so I shell out £40 a year for my Xbox Live Gold subscription, yet I admittedly don’t use it to its full potential. Most of my time on Xbox Live is spent in party chat, or tackling Spec Ops and other co-op based missions with friends. Racism, cursing, tea-bagging, and sexual slurs are not appealing to me. At all. When people find out I’m not a big Multiplayer gamer, especially with Call of Duty 4/Modern Warfare 2, they respond in such a way that suggests that’s what these games are all about. Whilst I’d agree Multiplayer is a big part of these game’s appeal and longevity, I’m one of those gamers who finds the story mode holds so much more weight. That isn’t the only reason why you won’t find me whizzing about the favela in Team Deathmatch, and that’s precisely what this post is about.

I’m no stranger to the lobby. I used to play in a clan. I used to be the captain of the Rainbow Six: Vegas division of a clan. Captain Rockers Delight! Even though I’m not a competitive gamer in the slightest, it was great to be a part of a group that played a game I loved regularly, and I got pretty good at Vegas as a result. For a girl ;) Indeed, those days were undoubtedly some of the most fun I’ve had as a gamer.

Perhaps spending so much time with Vegas was a double edged sword. In one respect, I became so confident with Vegas I was able to dive into Multiplayer and secure a spot in one of the top two positions on the leaderboard every time. It was devoid of that ‘n00b’ feeling I had when playing Gears of War, unable to master the ’shotgun and roll’ tactic that so often saw me killed. On the other hand, I now have the slow paced nature typically associated with Vegas etched into my brain, and I seem to be unable to familiarise myself with anything else. My kill to death ratio in Call of Duty is embarrassing.

From playing online so much I had my fair share of unsporting gamers; those who were quitting early or terminating the game if you were winning. Kicking you from the server if you were on a killing streak, and verbally abusing you for whatever reason they had deemed fit (”You’re a girl?! Eww, kick her from the server!” True story). I’m sick of that. I can go for the rest of my life without that and not miss it. Naturally, these things are absent from story mode. Yes, story mode is pleasant, advancing at a pace that suits you, bereft of distractions, it’s all about you. How nice.

Don’t get me wrong, I don’t hate Multiplayer, and if drastic actions were ever taken to ensure Xbox Live was a nicer place, then you might see my name ping up in your lobby from time to time. However, I don’t understand how so many gamers are tolerant of other’s bad behaviour. It is for this reason I am to assume that the kick most gamers get out of Multiplayer is purely competitive, and like I said before, I’m not a competitive gamer in the slightest. I guess this renders me intolerant of all the negatives that go hand in hand with playing online.

Multiplayer is a mixed bag. When I do bravely venture online, there are times I enjoy myself. I’ve gotten lucky in the past where I’ve landed a decent team, I’ve found people who are accepting of my less than admirable skills, or I’ve truly struck gold and have had a good run of kills. But those times are few and far between, and now that Infinity Ward have stripped party chat from Modern Warfare 2, what made playing with the masses bearable is no longer possible. So, I think I’ll continue to advance with the single player campaign; losing myself in a world at my own will, with the surround sound bumped to the max, the only offender being whatever villians I’m slaying in order to save the world. And you can enjoy having someone’s testicles bobbing up and down in your face.

So, to summarise, this is why I’m not a Multiplayer gamer:

  • I’m not competitive
  • I’m intolerant to other’s immature conduct
  • I don’t like testicles
  • Single player has no distractions
  • I like stories more so than aimless killing

I’m with you on this one. Although, I might recommend leaving your headset muted beside you on the couch next time you decide to venture online. Being oblivious to the nonsense spewing from others really makes the experience easier to enjoy.

Call of Duty, though… man, where to begin? I have friends that only play COD online. Literally. They have less than 1000 gamerscore and fewer than half a dozen games played, and they’ve owned an Xbox 360 for at least a couple years. I don’t know how they do it. Every match is the same - kill dudes. Even if there is an objective, it feels the same as the previous round. It’s the same thing, over and over. I get tired of it, real quick. Especially since no one seems interested in working together. I get much more enjoyment playing games online like BF: Bad Company, which has vehicles and larger maps. Or Killzone 2, where the objective changes several times in a match. COD just doesn’t do it for me.

I mute EVERYBODY as soon as I enter the lobby during COD online game play. Some of the stuff I have heard… unreal. I also enjoy telling little kids that swear at me to “get to bed” after 10pm. I don’t play online all that much but have somehow ended up with a decent kill/death ratio and ranking thus far. Too bad you don’t play on PS3 or we could shoot one another. =D

Past year taught me where is the fun factor for me in multiplayer - the coop experience. I like playing competitive modes, but the coop is where all the fun is. I’ve even jumped back into Halo 3 to get through the campaign in coop! The same thing goes with Modern Warfare 2 - I totally suck in every game mode except Spec Ops (yeah If you’d like to play - give me a message :P) and I guess that’s why I don’t play competitive MP in MW2 too often (and if I do, I mute everyone in the game).

I’d say multiplayer isn’t only competitive - you’ve got some wicked skills (seriously!), don’t waste it only on single player - try coop every now and then - FUN!

I really enjoy playing MP on MW2, but that’s mainly because I play with a group of dads so we don’t have to put up with the other idiots online. Although it’s the same objectives each time it’s great when you go up against another good team. Without playing with people I know it’s really no fun. You are always more than welcome to join us.

Don’t forget as well, you can always change your voice communication settings to “Friends Only”. It makes live a nicer place…

I’m with you on this one too. Where is the enjoyment in getting abuse down the headset for perhaps not being quite as good as some of the others in the game? For those of us who venture out into the real world and go to earn a living, we can’t sit around playing games getting in all the practice. What gets me regarding the multiplayer what with the competitiveness is that it is just a game.. no more than that! It should be fun not serious!

Racism and sexism should not be tollerated, but the poor rep system doesn’t help matters.

Like you Ashley I had the “n00b” feeling on Gears of War 1 & 2. While I finished the campain on Insane, heading over to MP is totally different and no fun.

As others have said the standout part of of MP os Co-op. I love it and its brought me back online to play those harder levels that I would never have dreamed of previously. GoW co-op through insane while being stupidly hard was also a great laugh. All I need to do is find more people to play the co-op with. Must try Halo 3 on Co-op one day.

XBL friends only is perhaps the only way to go, while perhaps limiting the potential it makes for a nicer game session.

Also this talk about Vegas is making me think its perhaps time to pick it up again and give it another go having got stuck previously!!

I know exactly what you mean about multiplayer.

These days I only ever play with friends or play solo on COD MW2 on mute to avoid the idiots that grace xbox live.

Maybe this is a call for a new clan for casual gaming friends as finding good people is difficult !

@Matt Muting my headset sure would have made playing Skate 2 MP a whole lot easier. I have a lot of friends the exact same, who have owned 360s for a couple of years but only hammer CoD online. I don’t quite understand it, but I’ve never been bitten by the CoD Multiplayer bug. I’ll tell you one game I have enjoyed playing online; Battlefield 1943. Everyone seems to keep themselves to themselves with that.

@Brent I think you mean “Too bad you don’t play on PS3 or I could shoot YOU”. Seriously, Call of Duty… I suck at it. It’s too fast paced for me, respawning then dying seconds later, rinse, repeat.

@Andrew Co-op is a whole different ball game. Playing with friends is as fun as video games get, I don’t have any issues with co-op at all. Man, our Left 4 Dead days were too much fun. Shame the sessions petered out. I’d be willing to start them up again.

@Dave I had no idea I could change voice communications to ‘friends only’. Thanks for the heads up.

@Steve Aah, don’t even get me started on the Xbox Live rep system! Useless springs to mind. As for Vegas, it’s certainly not without its flaws, but as I’m sure you’ve gathered, I’m a big fan of the games. Give it another whirl :)

@Mashup Design Finding enough casual gamers to form a clan that would enable you to have two decent sized opposing teams would be tough. If you only had enough to form one team you’d be looking at playing against strangers… Which is why a lot of people hate MP :p

I agree; I haven’t even ventured online enough to have the bad experiences. I mean, I don’t even find deathmatch or other versus forms of multiplayer fun on splitscreen with friends. You’re right, it’s not only the possibility of abuse online from strangers - I just don’t like games with no narrative trajectory or mission structure. They just seem pointless and repetitive. Co-op, though, I love. I just don’t seem to be online at the same time and wanting to play the same game as any of my friends. I should try harder at setting that up, now that more and more games have online co-op.

*Sheds a tear* This is ‘exactly’ how I feel about multiplayer. You’ve comprehensively covered exactly what my gripes are with it, so I have nothing further to add. Great article!

I totally agree with you Ash, i hate playing online as people expect you to be super awesome at the games and shout abuse when you miss a kill or something.

Even more so when you have a 100k+ gamerscore, they think that because you play a lot of games in your free time that you must be amazing at them and boot you or hurl abuse when you show you actually ain’t up to scratch.

On that note, if you are still doing spec ops on MW2 give me a shout, i’ve not found anyone to do it with yet and it’s not quite the same on single player.

I would enjoy the multiplayer-experience more if they actually cleaned it all up a bit. I’ve been playing MW2 online a bit lately, I just hate the frickin run-and-gunners out there.

When I play a FPS , I want teamwork, I want tactics and smart playing. That’s why I really dug Vegas online had a blast with that game. I just wish that Infinity Ward had a MP-mode for serious tactical players.

Every other game is so hard to play online as well, sports and fighting are also two genres that I like and geez, there is only the uber masters out there playing them. It’s hard to have a fun time getting your ass kicked every match.

While I’m not trying to tar an entire nation with a single brush, I do find the majority of abuse (apply to that what fits for you) seems to come from American children who shouldn’t be playing the game at all.

I do the majority of my CoD’ing during weekday evenings and very rarely come across these idiots, it’s only when I venture on at the weekend that it becomes a problem and a simple mute soon clears that problem up. I certainly don’t let it spoil my enjoyment of the game and while I’m not great at it, I’m not bad either.

The instant that MP’ing makes you angry or sad or just pissed off, it’s time to stop and find something more rewarding instead.

# December 20th, 2009 at 11:31 pm

I have mixed opinions to be honest… On the one hand I totally hate it online, waiting for games to connect, having to deal with immature tea-baggers and paying £40 a year for that isn’t the best thing! On the other hand; Halo 3, COD games and most other online enabled games have only ever seen the multiplayer side of life from me. I just never finish games single player, can’t get myself to play through a game and I have a lovely history with Counter Strike that was lost when I found Halo3.

I’m not sure if I’ll be paying for Gold this year, sad fact but I just can’t get myself to dish out £40 for something I don’t see myself using for long :(

I am fairly confident that your time spent with CODMW would be enhanced if there were achievements associated with the MP. ;) You can downplay it, but you’re one of the people I know who see gamerscore as a real incentive. Me personally, I love the MP because it has RPG elements and you can customise to a great degree. As for the a-holes on Live, well yes…it’s annoying but you can mute them very easily on MW2. I don’t entirely believe you’re not a competitive person, I have seen how annoyed you get sometimes! Hehe, although I think it would definately help if you had a group of regulars you played with.
