Hey Infinity Ward, What’s Happened To Veteran?

It would be no exaggeration to suggest the enduring difficulty of Veteran, and how much of a challenge completing the campaign on said difficulty proves to be, has become somewhat synonymous with the Call of Duty series. Whilst anyone can attempt and complete the game on Veteran with enough persistence, it is still never-the-less quite an accomplishment to end the campaign on such a climatic note. Instead of taking hours, missions can sometimes take days, often with your body getting acquainted with the floor more so than your gun. Indeed, it is not a challenge to be taken by those with little time, or by those with little patience.

Which is why, with Modern Warfare 2, many people skipped Veteran altogether and dived right in on either Normal or Hardened. For me, neither of those were an option, I was genuinely anticipating the challenge. And so I began battling my way through suburbia and snowy terrain expecting many of the tear-my-hair-out moments Call of Duty 4 provoked. Yet with each passing level, I was still waiting for that challenge to hit.

As I progressed with a steady pace throughout the campaign, I reached the half way milestone and was disappointed I had done so with relative ease. If you think back to past Call of Duty games, I’m sure there will be certain moments in each of the 6 installments that you remember advancing with sheer determination (I have only played 2,3,4, and 6). For example, in Call of Duty 4 the first mission which proved to be a real bastard was Charlie Don’t Surf, where you are in what appears to be a TV studio with Al-Asad’s speech being broadcast. Such levels set the pace for what those playing Veteran want — a real challenge. Why, then, was this absent from the latest Modern Warfare?

You could argue that Infinity Award, as a byproduct of Modern Warfare’s mainstream success, is trying to make the game more accessible to players of all expertise and age groups. Despite being rated an 18, kids of 14 and 15 were in line with me at the midnight launch. Well, not with me, I prefer men to be at least 10 years older. Perhaps it’s as a result of the success of Achievements, and those who are Gamerscore gobblers have aired their discontent at the uneasiness of unlocking these Achievements. I don’t know. I just know that I — and others who enjoy the difficulty of playing on Veteran — was disappointed.

The one challenge I faced with Modern Warfare 2 was fleeing from Makarov’s safehouse. As you sprint towards the LZ, you have a fleet of enemies chasing you from behind, some equipped with rocket launchers, others firing guns or lobbing grenades. You also have to face enemies ahead of you as well. Oh, and did I mention they are also equipped with rocket launchers?! I must have run this part of the level 50-odd times before giving up and restarting the level. You see, I figured that if I hung back before fleeing the house and picked the enemies off, I might not have to deal with the backlog of enemies chasing after me. It worked and I did it first time.

I’m by no means a Call of Duty expert. I’m certainly not skilled with games of this pace (if you want to see something more along my lines and where I can give others a run for their frags, it’s the slow paced Rainbow Six series), but I do love — and expect — a challenge with Call of Duty no less. I am disappointed Infinity Ward didn’t give me that, and even though I’ve tallied up a total of 19 hours in the campaign (most of that was accountable due to my search for intel), I still feel let down by the overall Veteran experience.

Infinity Ward, I’m sure you’re big fans of my blog (/sarcasm), so do us a favour and refrain from dumbing Veteran down. There are some of us out there who genuinely enjoy the challenge it offers. And for those who don’t, there’s always good ol’ Normal.

“I prefer men to be at least 10 years older.”

Ten years older than 14 or 15, or ten years older than you? ;o)

Can’t comment on Veteran being dumbed down, I’m one of the people with a shortage of patience, so I’ve only just started replaying on Veteran, or was, until I got distracted by AC2. :o)

Either way, I’m out of a shout. But back on-topic, I’m by no means a gamer and played this for the first time ’round a friend’s house and loved it. Even though I was on Normal mode ; )

I played the campaign on Regular (aka Normal). Just so I could enjoy my playthrough. I’m pretty impatient. But I also felt the lack of challenge. So now I’m replaying it on Hardened :)

I jumped straight onto veteran as soon as I got the game, knowing that I was always going to do it anyway. And you’re right, it certainly wasn’t as hard as the first Modern Warfare. It seemed to be that there were just the occasional sticking points where things just became really annoying for one checkpoint, and once you got past it, everything was back to normal. I remember getting really annoyed in the Favelas (a friend of mine says he knows two people who quit playing the game because of that level), and legging it away from Makarov’s safehouse. Although saying that, despite getting really annoyed at the safehouse retreat, it only took me about 4 or 5 proper goes (plus another 2 or 3 reloads where the checkpoint spawned me already being shot before I even had chance to move).

It’s hard to say whether I thought it was too easy. I think it took me just over 9 hours on veteran to complete the game. I remember getting seriously annoyed in MW on veteran, especially on one of the later missions where you have a time limit, but then I did feel like it was a huge achievement when I finally notched 1000/1000 on it. MW2 was less stressful, and though I haven’t finished special ops and collected all the intel yet, it doesn’t feel anywhere near as much of a big deal to 100% it.

I went through the game on Veteran and finished all the spec-ops mission on veteran with a friend in less than 24 hours. It wasn’t that hard at all, I guess it mostly depends on that you enemies doesn’t have infinite spawn and didn’t spam the nades as they did in previous games. They did have ridiculous aiming skills though, especially when playing that Airstrip-level on Spec-Ops, talk about super-aimers.

I enjoyed it though, really nice campaign , sweet spec-ops levels that we probably will see more of with DLC or something like that. I’m happy bought the game.

I finally finished MW2 on Vet last night, took me 9 and a half hours which I thought was fair amount of time. I only really struggled with the defending the DSM in the safehouse, I got away first time which is probably more to do with luck than anything.

It was definitely easier but just as enjoyable as MW, now I can use the internet normally without the story being ruined for me!

@Craig Hmm, I’ve only dated one guy my age and that didn’t go too well :p I hope you’ll be going back to CoD after AC.

@Arnold Oh yes, the Favela, certainly not easy on Veteran, but I don’t recall getting anywhere close to giving up. Also the mission you are remembering is No Fighting In The War Room (I think). The last proper level (before Mile High Club) with the time limit. That. Was. Brutal. Anyway, you’re absolutely right — it doesn’t feel that big a deal to 100% MW2.

@Christoffer Yes, super-aim! The stealth missions with the snipers have super-aimers too. Don’t get me wrong, I enjoyed it too. Despite it not feeling much of an accomplishment, it’s still one of the best games of ‘09 that I’ve played.

@Dave That bit was a pain in the arse. The guy defending the DSM alongside you (Scarecrow?) was always taken down leaving you to do it alone.

I’ve always found CoD AI to be rather suspect. They seem to have no concept of what they should and shouldn’t know about - They always know exactly where you are and almost always drop everything to attack you instead of your AI squadmates. This pretty much robs you of the ability to use your squadmates as a diversion because the moment you break from cover AIs tend to forget what they were shooting at and instantly target you. Only during the special case scripted missions are enemies unaware of your presence, and even then, the moment one guard spots you, even if you take him down instantly, every other guard for miles around suddenly has telepathic knowledge of exactly where you are, despite the fact that it’s still a blizzard and they shouldn’t be able to see anything.

# November 25th, 2009 at 4:55 pm

@ARNOLD
Well about the blizzard thing, I guess they would know which guard that’s missing and go to the latest known position of that guard, though it’s kind of wierd that they have the time to call for backup, or alarm others when you miss a shot and then take them out with the second one.

Aye, Veteran was way too easy this time round. I never managed Mile High Club on 4 but other than that, I’ve Veteraned my way through 2,3,4 & 5 and this was a massive disappointment. Thank fuck for Spec Ops!

Forgot you mentioned this one my status update! Glad i checked in for it..

As i said to you Miss Baxter, i thought it’s a huge let down.. i’m one of those mugs that did Mile High Club on MW1 within a few weeks of it being released and i loved it!. I’m very, very dissapointed in IW for not including a similar level in MW2. I could have forgiven the lack of difficulty on the campaign if they had stuck atleast one challenge in it.

An interesting thing a friend of mine who writes for several mags pointed out to me was this:
