Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 2 Highlights

I’m not going to review Modern Warfare 2. That would be considered a complete waste of my time; a blog post deemed worthless for a game of this stature. If you want a review, it’s safe to assume mine would go as follows: Fucking fantastic, buy it now. I do, however, want to share some personal highlights after completing the single player campaign. Naturally, there will be spoilers.

Hoops, baby

On the introductory mission, S.S.D.D. (Same Shit Different Day), you’re stationed in the camp alongside other U.S. Army Rangers. Part of your initiation involves running a test course otherwise known as ‘The Pitt’, an opening level which is now synonymous with Modern Warfare (F.N.G - Fucking New Guy - was Modern Warfare’s equivalent). Before that, though, it’s entirely possible to veer off course and explore the camp. Everyday sights of stationed army life play out before you. For example, there were soldiers atop a car fixing up their vehicle in preparation of heading out, others were familiarising themselves with their new weapons, while some soldiers were making the most of their down time and simply relaxing. But what peaked my interest were the two men playing basketball; the sheer realism of their motion was enough to have me stop and spectate for a few minutes. Sounds ridiculous, right? We were at war, yet I was hooked on two men dribbling and taking shots at a hoop.

Snowmobiles

What a juxtaposition of a level. Cliffhanger is a stealth mission, one that - if played correctly - requires you to take it steadily, blending into the blizzard and skillfully remaining undetected. Needless to say, it’s a slow paced level despite tension running high (I felt anxious every time my heartbeat sensor detected a nearby enemy). Then, as the level drew to a close, you were suddenly aboard a snowmobile, zipping in and out of trees at a ridiculously high speed, avoiding obstacles and taking out enemies while speeding full pelt downhill. Exhilarating to say the least, and the first moment of Modern Warfare 2 that really made me go ‘Wow‘.

Captain Soap MacTavish

As a Scot, I’ve noticed that Scottish people are usually portrayed less than admirably in video games. Take Fable II, we’re the fucking Gargoyles. And man, they irritate the shit out of me. But Captain Soap MacTavish is all kinds of amazing; masculinity personified. Even his silly haircut suits him.

Of Their Own Accord

Although it’s hard to say, I think Of Their Own Accord was my favourite mission in Modern Warfare 2 (but not by far) for the sheer fact it felt so heavy on the action. The world around you was quite a sight with it having descended into a wasteland as a product of war - buildings were torn down to just a pile of rubble, and at one point obstacles were actually falling from the sky requiring you to run to cover and dodge your death. It all felt quite eerie. I also loved the fact you actually were able to set foot inside The White House.

Soap on a Rope

One of the finest moments in the game, being airlifted from the gulag with Captain Soap MacTavish. Soap on a rope!

What were your highlights?

Had so many highlights while playing this game but If I was really being forced to pick then probably the following missions.

Submarine Mission where you were to infiltrate a kind of oil rig thing, loved bursting through them doors in slow motion and being practically hounded by the damn helicopter!

End Game mission with the speedboats and cut action scene, was probably my favourite bit from the whole game.

Snow Map which you already stated in your blog post, found this quite exciting sneaking up on my enemies!

I think my highlight was seeing all the tweets from people saying “Royal Mail haven’t delivered my pre ordered copy of MW2!” and “Got to Sainsbury’s and they’d sold out of MW2″. Oh yeah, and who can forget those cheap son of a bitches who got banned from xbox live on launch day for chipping their consoles.

Then of course, there’s this guy: http://psql.tumblr.com/post/245684894

Basically I’m a sadistic bastard.

Finished the SP yesterday and it kinda felt too short. But I played it on Regular en maybe gonna do another run on Hardened some day - also to check out all the details and stuff.

My favorite missions:

First mission, when you drive inside the Middle Eastern town, there is so much happening around you and it’s so f#cking intense… really blew me away.

The sneaky missions where you walk together with Soap/Price and got told: ‘you pick the left/right guy… one-two-threeee!’ - very very nice and felt awesome.

And of course the last mission. Didn’t really enjoy the speedboat-ride… kinda felt on-rails… but the last slow-motion-action-scene was awesome. Crawling towards the gun, grabbing your knife out of your own chest - all soooo awesome!

There are so much more moments… but I forgot most of them. It all went so fast, some levels are a blur to me now. I really need to replay it some day :)

Highlights for me:

> As you said, the opening level was brilliant. Reminded me of the show Generation Kill.

> Loved the levels based around the suburban towns in Virginia. The “burger hut level” where you are fighting back and forth in a shopping centre was just crazy.

> And then going into the tree lined residential areas is very cool and very unique. I’ve never played a game where smash through someone’s mailbox and then have a fire-fight across their living room : )

I’m only about 3/4’s of the way through the single player as I’m splitting my time between that and the multi-player. Can’t wait to see the final levels!

@Anthony, I actually hate levels in games where you control vehicles, but who can fault the snowmobiles?! :D

@Dan Yeah, I would never depend on ordering online for a game I was intent on picking up at launch. Sure, it may come early, but the flip side is that Royal Mail can easily balls up.

@Skar I also love the stealthy co-op missions. I love taking orders and having the mission end successfully. Not so much fun when that goes wrong, though.

@Dennis The game doesn’t have any poor levels, so I’m sure you’ll enjoy the last quarter as much as the rest. Hope I didn’t spoil anything for you.
