My/Microsoft’s Video Marketplace Blunder

I raved about Microsoft’s Video Marketplace on the Xbox 360 several months ago when I popped my cherry with The Nanny Diaries.

Two nights ago I had a group of friends visiting, all of us in the mood for a few scares (watching The Descent the previous night should have put me off). With the closest Blockbuster having recently been closed down, probably due to this inconvenient recession we’re finding ourselves in, Video Marketplace was my only option for anything outside of my own DVD collection.

Naturally, I assumed my experience would be much like my last one, which was entirely blip-free. Common sense told me, however, that we would have to wait a little longer before playing the movie as we had opted for the High Def version instead of the Standard Def version.

An hour later after many nachos and a few beers, the movie was only at 13% complete. We were still waiting for the ‘Play Now’ option to become available, like it did last time at only 2%, but with no such luck.

Defeated, we stuck on one of my HD DVDs instead (The Reaping, which really wasn’t very scary at all despite there being a Devil child), and even after that had finished our Video Marketplace movie was only at 53%. 3 hours had passed and we’d given up all hope of watching the movie that night.

Yesterday my download resumed while I kept myself occupied with exploring coastal Thailand for a second time round with Miss Croft. We’d rearranged our scary movie night for tonight instead, but I’m still having problems downloading!

The movie keeps stopping every few minutes with a notification (which I keep mistaking for an Achievement) popping up to inform me downloading has stopped, but with no explanation as to why. Not only that, but now Video Marketplace has disappeared entirely from my Dashboard. Where the hell has it sodded off to?!

So, I’ve had two very different experiences with Video Marketplace, which has left me with one real conclusion. Downloading a HD movie is too much of a bitch, so I’ll stick to my sub-par quality for the sake of actually being able to watch my purchase.

One Missed Call, you better be worth it.

*Mutters usual derogatory remarks about Microsoft not being able to do anything right*

I’m sorry to hear about your troubles. Tisn’t good when things screw-up.

With regards to downloading HD films in the UK, in my mind there are two issues. The first is that broadband speed and allowance needs to increase drastically. At home I have an 8Mbps connection which is sufficient to either download or stream films/TV in standard definition (except for the PS3, which seems to take forever + a day to download ‘anything’) but anything HD, there’s no chance.

Some parts of Europe and beyond easily have between 50Mbps and 100Mbps connections already. The UK needs to upgrade infrastructure, and stop bickering that it’ll cost a couple of £billion. MUCH less than bailing out the banks and other shenanigans of all things ‘fiscal’.

The second issue I’d say is the service provided. Anything from bad software/bugs, corrupted video files etc can just stop a file downloading in its tracks, and if your entire Video Marketplace has disappeared, then that certainly doesn’t help either. If Microsoft have actually removed the service, then pulling the rug from under customers’ feet with no reason after you’ve paid for it (I assume) is poor at best.

I’m sooo sorry for the rant, but I felt in the mood for one. Hope what I’ve been wittering on about makes some kind of sense! I hope this matter gets resolved for you :)

Y’see, I was kind of stupid about this in regards to how long it would take to download. I just assumed it would allow me to play it while it was downloading because that’s what happened when I used it before. But I’m guessing that all changes with HD, and I’m not techy enough to know all about the download speeds, which is why I was surprised we didn’t get to watch it even 3 hours after the download began. But that’s my ignorance.

What’s annoyed me since is that my download won’t resume, but this could be because of problems Xbox Live is encountering (not that I’ve been notified), which would explain the disappearance of Video Marketplace. Anyway, I’ll keep my fingers crossed that over the next day or two my download resumes and is successful as I have been charged for this.

I still have my video marketplace, although never intend to use it after that story.

BTW - if you´re looking for some scary moments:

Ever tried Left4Dead on your xbox ? As i understood your prefernces it should be the perfect experience for you: coop as central game-mechanic, dense story full of atmosphere and really fearful moments with hordes of zombies approaching you.

try it - on PC it´s a very comfortabel distraction from a work-day to slash some 500 zombies in the evening :-)

[...] DISAPPEARED, TOO! It’s back now, but I don’t care as I’ll never use it again. I don’t know where it’s gone or how to get it back. Let’s just mutter derogatory [...]
