Aside: Nintendo Wii’s Genius Marketing

Surely you’ve all seen a Nintendo Wii advert or two? Especially in the run up to Christmas, I’ve noticed 360 and Wii adverts have become particularly prolific on TV. The Xbox 360 adverts irritate the hell out of me, sure, but the Wii adverts take the crown for annoyance by a long shot.

All Wii adverts share the same principles; an overly zealous family gathered around a 50″ plasma, with shiny wooden floors and beige furniture, and the father kitted out in a perfectly knitted cashmere sweater. Oh, and all sporting ludicrously bright smiles seeing as they’re the happiest they’ve ever been.

Wii Music is the king of annoying Nintendo Wii adverts. Have you seen this monstrosity? I hunted high and low for the video, but can only find the other UK advert for Wii Music, which is still bad but not even close in terms of bugging the hell out of me. It makes me hate the Wii even more, which I never knew was possible.

Are they really that bad? I love my Wii and so do my kids but I haven’t seen any commercials on the Wii or Wii Music (mostly because we don’t watch much live TV, everything is on our TiVo).

Of course it’s personal opinion. They irritate me, but the Wii Music one was by far the worst I’ve seen. I really wish I could have found the advert. It’s cheese personified.

I think the Wii advertising - and pretty much all Nintendo advertising full stop - is quite brilliant in terms of marketing. They really push their branding and stay true to themselves. None of them annoy me one bit, and they actually get me wanting to play the Wii for a minute or two (’til the feeling goes away). But perhaps we don’t get nearly as many here as you do there. There’s not much game advertising on TV here at least, so I’m grateful for any that I see. You’ve gotta admit, they’re better than boring adverts for beauty products or cars, right?

Rhiannon: Do you know what I really dislike about Wii advertising in general? They tend to push the demographic they’re aiming for more so than the games. But that’s worked well for them so far seeing as they’re outselling all other consoles on the market. I find their adverts cheesy, but that’s possibly what they’re going for seeing as they target a different market to what I fall under. And I absolutely love car adverts, if we’re talking Honda and the one with the dancing dog (Golf, I think?), haha. We get quite a bit of game advertising here, both on TV and I’ve started to notice else where such as buses, billboards etc.

I absolutely cannot stand those Wii Music adverts. I mean seriously, they barely even sound like the songs they’re supposed to be.

I suppose all I can say is, the Wii is WAY too mainstream. And yes, the adverts are annoying.

wii music is definitely annoying every time to me. I wish they better switch that to a better one. But I think they made it a success through annoying us with that music.
