Aside: Far Cry 2 Almost Slipped Under My Radar

Wow, I almost didn’t give a second look to Far Cry 2, but with all the fantastic reviews that have been cropping up it’s hard not to take notice. Then again, today I’ll be picking up Fable II, then it’s christmas just around the corner with Gears 2, Fallout 3 and Underworld all on my wish list. And I’ve still got Condemned 2 to begin, with Infinite Undiscovery on my to-buy list. Argh!

Hah.. I was reading your reply to my comment earlier on “linear shooters”, well, Far Cry 2 has a 50km² open environment so off to the shops I went at 9am and picked up a copy! :)

A 50km² open environment?! Didn’t know it was that large. I see you’re online playing it at the moment. Enjoy!

For whatever reason, I haven’t been following Far Cry as closely as I probably should have. I played and loved the original on PC a few years back, but just haven’t been paying much attention to the follow-up, that isn’t really much of a follow-up. That could have actually gone with a new IP this time around, as it doesn’t resemble Far Cry at all, with the exception of the incredible environment. It’s a sandbox game set in a massive African landscape, and there’s no main character. You get to pick the mercenary you want to play as right off the bat. Very strange for a Far Cry game, but I’m loving it so far. Many awe-inspiring moments and I’ve only put in a little over an hour.

You’ve made a great point. There are too many great games coming out now. I guess it’s not possible to grab them all at once, but at least we’ll get something to play on the beginning of 2009.

I’m waiting for:
- Fallout 3
- Call of Duty 5
- Fable 2
- Far Cry 2
- Left 4 Dead (though not sure)
- Dead Space
- Gears of War 2

That is a huge list (it just suprised even me. oops). Not to mention “Force Unleashed” which I still haven’t completed, “Braid”, “Castle Crashers”, “Mass Effect”. I guess the best solution would be to become full time gamer and get paid for it but it doesn’t look like happening :P

Matt: Wonder why they didn’t go with a new IP all together then. Well I’m a sucker for gorgeous looking environments! Haven’t played a Far Cry game before though, so not entirely sure what to expect.

andrzejkala: Aww, Left 4 Dead is a must, me thinks! 4 player co-op? Zombies? Come on - sounds great! My list is just as big as yours, if not bigger. Depressing actually!

@Rockers
It is quite depressing when I think about it more - I just do miss times when I could chill every evening and put some time into fun/games/other stuff and not work.

Yup - I do envy you @Matt :P
