New Xbox Experience Looks Kind Of Shite, No?

Friday, October 10th, 2008 at 10:04 am in Rants · Comments

I know it’s unfair to condemn something before it’s even made its way to our 360s. After all, as my post regarding my hatred of sci-fi and my consequent love of Mass Effect proved, you can’t judge a book by its cover. But what you can do is develop initial impressions then rant about them on your blog!

Everywhere I look at the moment, various updated screenshots of the New Xbox Experience are being published onto the internets, yet friends of mine and readers of this blog have been fairly quiet on what their initial impressions on it are. From the moment this new-look and dramatic overhaul of the dashboard was revealed at E3 this year, I’ve been anti-NXE, mainly spouting much abuse towards the ridiculous Avatars we have to adopt.

New Xbox Experience

Swapping my colourfully cute, cartoon superhero-wannabe for a characterised Ashley Baxter doesn’t sit well with me for various reasons. Firstly, you can’t deny that the Avatars carry an unsettling resemblance to the Nintendo Wii’s Miis (sounds funny to say that aloud, right?), taking a less realistic approach than that of the PlayStation 3’s Avatars. At least that is what first popped into my head when the Avatars were originally unveiled back in July: “Wait… I thought this was Microsoft’s keynote?”. My problem with this is largely down to irritation; I’m sure I wouldn’t have such an issue with Avatars if Microsoft had come up with the use of them first and implemented them from the beginning. But from where I’m sitting, they’re a tacky add-on which have wasted a bunch of money I’ve spent up until this point on GamerPictures.

Secondly, and this is getting into territory I’ve never really discussed, I’ve chosen to keep my identity on Xbox Live fairly ‘neutral’ - for lack of a better word. I didn’t choose a ‘tag that would reveal my gender so obviously, nor have I opted for an ultra feminine GamerPicture. I know anyone that accesses this blog can immediately see I’m female, but on Xbox Live - because of the abundance of weirdos, some of which I have already had the misfortune of coming across - it’s probably not a great idea to flaunt the fact you have a vagina (if you do indeed have a vagina). I know female gamers who have a hard enough time from guys assuming they’re girls because of their ‘Tag and GamerPicture, provoking some of the less sociably adept boys to send XBL messages full of sexual innuendos and what not. With your Avatar, as far as I can tell, there’s going to be no way around this problem; it’s all laid out on the table for everyone to see, so to speak.

New Xbox Experience

Thirdly, and this goes for the NXE on a whole as opposed to just the avatars, I feel the direction Microsoft is taking the Dashboard in is definitely a less mature approach to what we currently have. To me this feels as though Microsoft is changing the direction too late in the console’s life, and purely catering for the more casual gamer they’re trying to land in terms of aesthetics. Yes, we know Nintendo has opened the eyes to how lucrative and big the casual gaming market is, and yes, we know Microsoft wants in on the action after becoming so well known for producing shooter after shooter. But to do it when, in my opinion, the 360 has its target audience well and truly established is just going to piss off a lot of the long-time 360 owners. The only screenshot I’ve seen so far that I felt was an improvement over what we currently have, was the marketplace section for downloading trailers or DLC from a particular game. It looks better from a user interface perspective, and sexier to boot!

Going back to the Avatars, I don’t know the extent of character customization, and frankly I don’t care whether I have 3 hairstyles to choose from or 30. I wish I could keep one of the many GamerPictures I’ve purchased over the years. But hey, at least we can keep our themes, right? I currently have a Viva Pinata theme, which mainly consists of close-ups of the characters in the game. If you take a look at the impending Dashboard update you’ll see a gray blob covering a good half of the theme. So while Microsoft has been quick to boast you can still use whatever Themes you’ve bought and downloaded, they’re 50% obscured by grayness…

I know I’ve ranted about the aesthetics and completely brushed over the new features and functionality. But meh, those Avatars really are damn ugly. I’m really looking forward to seeing if I’m alone in these sentiments, so leave a comment and let me know!

EDIT: I came across this post 2 minutes ago, which basically says creating an Avatar is mandatory, but if you’re not hot on the idea, you never have to use it. Not sure how this will work. Only time will tell!

I completely agree 100% with you regarding the avatars and the some-what anonymity of the current system, I can see that being an issue for girls absolutely. My wife plays on my Xbox Live account a fair bit and has never had any issues, that said, if some of the guys playing Call of Duty 4 knew they were getting their asses handed to them by a girl I doubt the response would be the same.

I’m looking forward to NXE in general though, I dislike the avatars but some of the other areas of it look really exciting, especially the My Xbox and Marketplace sections. All of this said, I don’t think there is too much wrong with the current system. I’m torn, but I guess we really have no choice at the end of the day other than the ability to rant on our blogs. Well said Ash.

Although I’m not thrilled with the complete overhaul of Dashboard, I still can’t agree with you (at least not at all points :) )

I am actually happy that MS is doing something about the Dashboard. I got used to it, but after over a year owning an X360 still can’t like it. I used various themes, but it’s simply cluttered and very difficult to read. The new Dashboard brings some clarity to the presentation of content. You might not like the way it’s designed (I hate the grey stuff too), but it’s at least easily readable.

The avatars are a matter of one’s own likings. They do look like Wii’s rip-off, but on the other hand - are decent, and quite well designed. Also the level of customization is great (and there will be even more pieces to this puzzle later on). Maybe a solution to this problem would be giving the avatars to people, but allow them to keep the gamer picture if the don’t use them.

Another thing about them that I do like is the presentation of friends list - might be difficult to get through it when you have dozens of “friends”, but I like to keep it clean and without asshats, so It should work just fine.

So… I do like avatars, I think they look ok and might be fun to play around a bit, thus I can’t agree with you on this matter. On the other hand - I totally agree with you on the subject of themes - that sucks balls.

We’ll see how it turns out soon.

(Offtopic)
I didn’t realize there were something “pickup-lines” on XBXLive :D Asshats on XBL are common, but picking up grils and sending sexually-flavoured messages through XBL - first time I’ve heard of it and honestly - WTF is wrong with these people? :/

I totally agree with you. The only thing I like about the new UI is that it’s not that cluttered as the previous one. And the avatars are horrible. Christ…

“it’s all laid out on the table for everyone to see”

I should certainly hope not!

I’ve not been on top of the news for this, but I have had a glance at the screenshots and I don’t like the avatars either. They don’t have anything to do with the point of the console: to play games! I’m fine with having a little picture so I can be quickly identified in a list of friends, but I don’t care for spending the time to tweak my avatar to make it more like me. I might just randomly select whatever is available and leave it at that. If it ends up with a mullet, big purple glasses, evil villain mustache and clothes that look like they were rejected from the 70s then I couldn’t care less.

Apart from that, I am open to a new UI as long as it does improve the dashboard experience.

Will it be possible to switch gender of your avatar? If so, I can’t wait for people to sexually confuse those annoying 13-year-old kids who think their “1337 skills” REQUIRE excessive squeaky “ur mum” and “ur just a n00b LOL I KILED U” on mic.

Honestly for me I’m looking forward to the dashboard itself. I’m not sure on the avatars, wanna see how they are done and how they are used (I’m pretty sure they aren’t meant to replace gamerpics). I thought avatars were mainly meant for those casual games like Uno and other Arcade games. Also, it was my understanding that avatars used by games will be up to the developer, so I don’t know how many big ones will use them on their bigger, hardcore gamer games. Either way, we will see. I new UI for me does look better. I do love my blades but I like the new look and have been looking to try it out. Of course maybe the biggest thing for me will be the addition of Netflix (granted this wouldn’t affect you). Netflix streaming doesn’t support Mac yet so I can’t stream on my iMac, so this will finally let me stream on my TV.

Interesting to note all the differing opinions.

I can’t wait for the changes. I’ve always hated the current Xbox360 interface. It’s just so haphazard and looks like someone threw up over a rainbow. From a UI and user experience point of view, it’s absolutely terrible. The more transparent the UX is, the better.

Like you, I’m hoping we won’t be forced into anything with the avatar system. I like the avatars but, like you, prefer to keep my gender anonymous. I’m hopeful, though. If all else fails, I’ll just make my avatar look like an alien or something.

I’ve been keeping quiet on this subject deliberately. Mostly because I’m almost certain we aren’t seeing screenshots of the finished product. Where are the ads? It wouldn’t be a Microsoft product if there wasn’t some way of cashing in.

I hadn’t given the avatars much thought, and it never crossed my mind how it would “expose” females in a negative way. But I definitely see your concern and believe you have reason to be worried. Hopefully the Xbox team has given this some thought and consideration as well.

Regarding gamerpics - I read somewhere that they could be used as art for your clothing. A logo on your avatar’s shirt, for example.

But most importantly, I don’t see how this new Dashboard is going to make navigating the marketplace and other areas that have multiple sub-areas easier to get around. It seems as though there would be more clicks to get to where you’re going, and more digging than is currently necessary. It’s hard to say without being hands on with it, though. Which is why I’ve been biting my tongue thus far. :P
